Real Business Experience

I won’t pretend to know your industry better than you do. My role is to bring an experienced outside perspective, ask the questions that need asking, and help uncover the commercial opportunities that can make a real difference.

Experience Behind the Advice

Building, Growing and Selling a Business

I built Premier Marine Fuels into a substantial international marine fuel broking business before merging it with Wilhelmsen Bunkers to create Wilhelmsen Premier Marine Fuels. The combined business operated from London, Oslo, Singapore and Cape Town and handled around 8 million tonnes of marine fuel annually.

In 2009, Wilhelmsen acquired my remaining shareholding. I stayed with the business in a key role following the sale.

Starting Again at 50

At 50, I retired from the oil business. Rather than retire altogether, my wife Brigitte and I moved to Cornwall and started again, creating The Emerald — a luxury sustainable holiday development.

I had no previous building experience, but we set ourselves the challenge of achieving the Government's highest Code Level 6 sustainability standard. The project went on to become a Guardian Sustainable Business case study.

It reinforced something I've believed throughout my career: you don't have to know everything yourself. You need a clear idea, the right people, commercial judgement and the determination to make it happen.

Different businesses. Different challenges. The same commercial fundamentals.
